Agarkar Unveils 2027 ODI World Cup Strategy for Virat Kohli,…
India’s chief cricket selector, Ajit Agarkar, has reassured that the senior players, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, are not being evaluated based on a trial for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. The three-match series will not determine their chances for the 2027 World Cup.
Agarkar explained that the exceptional records of Kohli and Sharma make it unreasonable to judge their future prospects based on one series. The first ODI between India and Australia is due to take place in Perth on Sunday. Both Kohli and Sharma solely focus on playing ODI cricket, and have been absent from international competition for six months leading up to the series with Australia.
By the time the 2027 World Cup in Southern Africa comes around, Rohit will be over 40 and Kohli will be past 39. While some have succeeded at similar ages, the physical demands of the modern game have increased the importance of youth.
In an interview with NDTV, Agarkar affirmed that both players still have a significant part to play in the team. He noted the importance of considering the future of the team and the current situation, two years from now.
He concluded that it would be foolish to put players of Kohli and Sharma’s calibre on trial for every game. Instead, the achievement of their goals, in terms of trophies and runs, should be evaluated over time. The selector emphasised the importance of a healthy balance between experienced and new players in leading the team to success. According to Agarkar, legacy cricketers like Kohli and Sharma have earned their status and should be given the respect they deserve.
