Ajit Agarkar Discusses his Position as India’s Chief…
Ajit Agarkar, the BCCI chief selector, recently shared insights about his position, explaining the challenges and pressures associated with his role. After his playing career, Agarkar transitioned into roles as a cricket commentator before taking up his current position as the BCCI’s chairman of selectors. He stated that being a selector has been the most challenging aspect of his cricket-related roles, while his playing days brought the most satisfaction.
He shared, “Being a commentator is relatively easier. However, playing gives the most satisfaction. As a player, you constantly know that your place on the field is on the line. The one advantage as a player is that the ball or the bat is in your hand. If you play well or make a mistake, it often dictates the trajectory of your career.”
He continued, “As a selector, the challenges are different. Once you pick a squad of 15, you have no direct control. With the depth of talented cricketers we currently have, many things are out of your hands. It’s a demanding, high-pressure job. A decision made can impact a player’s career, either positively or negatively. You cannot please everyone, so you do the best job you can.”
Agarkar, having served as the chairman of the BCCI selection committee since July 4, 2023, also highlighted the positives and negatives of having a large pool of players. He recognizes the healthy competition it creates but also acknowledges the critique of decisions due to increased fanbases.
When asked about his attention to social media trends like #JusticeForShreyasIyer, Agarkar responded firmly: “I don’t. It is a no-win situation. We watch a lot of cricket through the course of the year.
