Ajit Agarkar Unveils Reason behind Mohammed Shami’s Absence…

The former chief selector of India, Ajit Agarkar, provided an explanation for the exclusion of Mohammed Shami from the England series, stating it was due to fitness concerns. However, the specific reason for Shami’s absence from the upcoming Australia ODI series was not detailed. Shami’s latest game was the Champions Trophy’s final, followed by playing nine matches in IPL 2025. He had to leave the league as a result of an injury.

In the meantime, Agarkar talked about how Shubman Gill took over the role of the ODI captain from Rohit Sharma, stating it’s nearly impossible to manage three captains.

After a three-month hiatus from the sport, Shami returned to cricket, playing in the Duleep Trophy for the East Zone. He only successfully took one wicket in 34 overs. Despite predictions of his place in the Australia ODI team, he was not chosen.

When questioned about it, Shami told PTI, “Selection isn’t in my control. If there is a fitness issue, I wouldn’t be here playing for Bengal. I think I don’t need to comment on this and spark controversy. If I can play four-dayers [Ranji Trophy], I can also play 50-overs cricket.”

Agarkar addressed Shami’s comments at the NDTV World Summit, saying, “If he stated that to me, I would answer it. I have had multiple discussions with him over recent months. If he said something, that is a conversation for me to have with him.”

With regards to his fitness issues, Agarkar mentioned, “If he were fit, he would have been on that plane to England. We had eager hopes of including him for the Australia tour. If he manages to regain his fitness in the next two months, then things might change.”

In response to the chief selector’s statement about not having updates regarding Shami’s fitness, Shami said that it’s not his responsibility or job to provide such updates. His job, according to him, is to go to the NCA, prepare, and play matches.

Currently, Mohammed Shami is participating in the Ranji Trophy tournament.
