Alcaraz’s Mixed Emotions: Victory Touched by Zverev’s Misfortune

Alexander Zverev took a medical timeout at 2-1 in the second set and struggled to regain focus for the rest of the match.
Carlos Alcaraz continued his outstanding performance by securing his seventh consecutive ATP tour final spot after defeating Alexander Zverev at the Cincinnati Open. The score of 6-4, 6-3 sets Alcaraz up for an exciting final against Jannik Sinner, a familiar opponent from their matches in Rome, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon finals.

In the semifinal clash, Alcaraz aggressively targeted Zverev’s forehand with powerful cross-court shots. Zverev attempted to counter by directing his shots down the line to break Alcaraz’s pattern.
Despite trailing 2-3 in the first set, Alcaraz switched tactics, demonstrating remarkable shot-making skills to capture the first set and secure a break in the second. Although he briefly let Zverev back in with three double faults, Zverev, hindered by an injury sustained in his quarter-final win against Ben Shelton, couldn’t make a comeback.
Alcaraz left a message for Zverev on camera, expressing, “Happy for the final but feeling bad for Sascha. Wish you all the best.”
During his on-court interview, Alcaraz admitted it was hard to focus on his game while being concerned about Zverev’s condition.
“It’s challenging to play someone who isn’t at 100%,” Alcaraz said. “Especially someone like Sascha, both a great player and person. We share a good relationship outside the court. The match started well, with quality rallies, but he began to struggle. My focus shifted to his well-being instead of my game. It was challenging, and I wish him the best.”
Alcaraz has reached his ninth Masters 1000 final, marking his first on hard courts since winning in Indian Wells the previous year. He remains undefeated at 16-0 in Masters 1000 tournaments for the year, having clinched the titles in Monte-Carlo and Rome. At 22 years and three months, Alcaraz is the third-youngest to reach nine Masters 1000 finals, following Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
