Alex Gagne Joins Colorado Avalanche on Two-Year Rookie Contract: NHL Updates
The Colorado Avalanche have recruited a promising new defender, Alex Gagne, to their rosta for a period of two years. With an entry-level contract extending through to the 2026-27 season, this 23-year-old player has made a significant name for himself during his college career at the University of New Hampshire. Not only did he serve as team captain, but he also evolved into one of Hockey East’s most trusted two-way defenders.
Throughout his college career, Gagne performed exceptionally well, putting up 17 points in 35 games with the University of New Hampshire during the 2024-25 season. His superior skills and leadership qualities earned him a place on the Hockey East Third All-Star Team. Over his four NCAA seasons, he played 139 games, achieved seven goals, and assisted 41 times, totalling 48 points.
Before joining the college ranks, the Bedford, New Hampshire native played in the United States Hockey League with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Muskegon Lumberjacks. His most successful season was in 2020-21, during which he scored 26 points in 53 games. This consistent showing made him a dependable choice at all play levels.
Despite being originally selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the sixth round of the 2021 NHL Draft, Gagne did not sign with the club and landed as a free agent. The Avalanche seized the opportunity and brought him into their system, thus adding another young defender to strengthen organizational depth.
His size, maturity, and leadership experience acquired from captaining New Hampshire are expected to aid him in transitioning into the professional realm. The Avalanche, having finished the previous season with a 49-29-4 record and 102 points, are focusing on prospect development and building depth across their team. The inclusion of Alex Gagne is not just a personal milestone for the player but also a strategic move by Colorado, investing in a reliable and adaptable defender potentially critical for the future of the organization.
