Astros triumph over Marlins with three powerful multi-run hits
Yainer Diaz hit a three-run homer, and Jose Altuve scored a two-run home run, helping the Houston Astros to clinch a 7-3 win against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night. This genteel performance was complemented with another two-run triple courtesy of Jeremy Pena.
The Astros are set on securing a three-game sweep in a match slated for Wednesday afternoon. The day’s game involved a pre-planned bullpen scenario with Steven Okert starting, pitching 1 2/3 innings of one-run ball. AJ Blubaugh, a rookie reliever, took over for the subsequent five innings, notching his first-ever major league win. Blubaugh allowed two runs off three hits and one walk while striking out five players.
The Marlins’ starter Cal Quantrill allowed nine hits, three walks, and conceded seven runs in over four innings. He managed to strike out two players. This contrasts his performance in the previous three starts where he only allowed one run within 16 innings.
Rookie center fielder Jakob Marsee showed his mettle by going 2-for-2, including his first big-league homer and a walk. His five major league games tally stands at 6-for-12, inclusive of one single, three doubles, one triple, one homer, and five walks.
Jesus Sanchez, a former Marlins outfielder, was instrumental in the first inning. After a single hit, he scored on Altuve’s 374-foot homer to the left. The Astros were straight into a formidable 4-1 lead at the close of the fourth, with Pena hitting his two-run triple, adding to Altuve’s magnificent hit on a high cutter.
Things took a turn in the fifth, as Carlos Correa singled out one, Walker doubled, and Diaz hit a massive 405-foot homer to the left, his 16th one. Despite the Marlins narrowing the gap to 7-3 on solo homers by Marsee in the fifth and Wagaman in the seventh, it wasn’t enough. The Astros finally reigned supreme, deploying a total of five pitchers, including Josh Hader, who pitched a scoreless ninth in a non-save situation.
