Atlanta Falcons QB Switch: Kirk Cousins Slated to Start as Michael Penix Jr. Faces Critical Knee Injury in Week 8

As the Atlanta Falcons prepare for Week 8, the team’s quarterback position is shrouded in uncertainty. Starter Michael Penix Jr. is recovering from a knee injury sustained in last week’s 35-3 loss against the San Francisco 49ers. He is listed as questionable, presenting an opportunity for 37-year-old Kirk Cousins to potentially return to the starting lineup versus the Miami Dolphins.

Falcons coach Raheem Morris confirmed that Cousins has been taking substantial practice reps with the first-team offense to ensure that the team is prepared if Penix is unavailable. Penix suffered a bone bruise in his left knee last Sunday, limiting his practice throughout the week. Despite efforts by Atlanta’s coaching staff to prepare Penix for the game, insiders suggest that Cousins starting is highly likely.

Penix, who was the Falcons’ first-round pick last year, has started nine games over two seasons. He continues to adapt to the NFL, with a pass completion rate of 61%, 1,409 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions this season. His Quarterback Rating (QBR) ranks 22nd in the league.

The Falcons acquired Cousins in free agency while drafting Penix in the first round last year. In 2024, Cousins started 14 games before Penix took over for the last three games of the season. In 2025, Penix is the designated starter, but his health might prompt a shift to Cousins in Week 8.

This start would mark Cousins’ first since Week 15 of 2024. Despite his absence, Morris affirmed that Atlanta is prepared and stressed Cousins’ experience. Notably, Cousins’ potential comeback comes after a strong start last season marred by a struggle in the final five games stemming from elbow and shoulder injuries.

At the moment, Atlanta has a 3-3 record heading into their Week 9 bye, following a loss against the 49ers. They hope Cousins can integrate smoothly to maintain offensive productivity while Penix recovers. This decision highlights the challenging task of fostering a rookie quarterback’s development alongside the need for immediate results in a competitive NFC South.
