Auston Matthews Reacts as Mitch Marner’s $96M Move to Golden Knights Stirs Emotions | NHL News Times of India

Mitch Marner’s move to the Vegas Golden Knights from the Toronto Maple Leafs has been the talk of the NHL. Marner, who signed an eight-year, $96 million contract on July 1, ended his nine-season run with the Maple Leafs.

Auston Matthews, Marner’s longtime teammate, has finally broken his silence, offering a heartfelt and professional response. Matthews expressed that he would miss Marner, describing him as a great friend and teammate. However, he also highlighted that this is the business aspect of the sport and wished Marner the best.

During the Hockey Night in Brampton charity event, Matthews addressed Marner’s exit for the first time. He showed respect for his former linemate and is now ready to lead Toronto into a new era.

Marner, on the other hand, had no hesitation about his decision. He stated that Vegas was high on his list of preferred destinations and he was grateful for the opportunity. At the age of 28, the winger saw the move as an opportunity to join a Stanley Cup-winning franchise and immerse himself in Nevada’s thriving hockey atmosphere.

Throughout his nine years with the Maple Leafs, Marner made a name for himself among the franchise’s greats. He scored 741 points in 657 games, ranking him fifth in franchise scoring. Despite this, and his selection for the NHL All-Star three times, it was “difficult” for him to leave his hometown team without delivering a Stanley Cup. His emotional goodbye on Instagram reflected this regret.

However, the winning culture of Vegas and the chance for a fresh start swayed his decision. On the flip side, Toronto now has the challenge of filling the void left by Marner, a challenge that will largely fall on Matthews and the core team.

With Marner pursuing a Stanley Cup in Vegas and Matthews helming a reshaped Maple Leafs lineup, the upcoming NHL season promises compelling storylines, reinvigorated rivalries, and a fair share of drama.
