Bangladesh May Replace Pakistan in Men’s Asia Cup Hockey After Withdrawal Over Security Concerns
New Delhi: Bangladesh is likely to take Pakistan’s spot in the men’s Asia Cup hockey tournament this month, as Pakistan withdrew due to security issues. The event is scheduled to start on August 29 in Rajgir, Bihar.

The Indian government had assured visas for the Pakistan team, but the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has declined to travel due to security concerns. Sources in Islamabad informed HT that the team will not travel to India for the tournament.
Organizers have approached Bangladesh to replace Pakistan in the eight-team tournament, where the winner will qualify for the next year’s World Championship. Hockey India stated that the situation will be clarified in the next couple of days.
“We received an invitation from the AHF (Asian Hockey Federation) this afternoon. If all goes well, we will participate in the Asia Cup. Preparations are already underway,” said Lt. Col. (retd) Riazul Hasan, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Hockey Federation, according to media reports.
“The Indian government is ready to provide visas to Pakistani players, but if they choose not to come, it’s their decision. Bangladesh has been invited to participate should Pakistan not attend, but we will await confirmation,” a Hockey India official told PTI.
The Asia Cup serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2026 World Cup, and Pakistan’s absence jeopardizes their qualification prospects. The Pakistan Hockey Federation had previously suggested relocating the tournament outside India. Besides hosts India, China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Oman, and Chinese Taipei are confirmed participants.
