BCCI Addresses Speculations on Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma’s ODI Prospects Ahead of 2027 World Cup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has denied speculation regarding the ODI future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma ahead of the 2027 World Cup. The cricket board stated its immediate focus remains on Asia Cup and T20 World Cup preparations.

The BCCI responded to rumors about Kohli and Sharma’s pending ODI future, which were fueled by a media report suggesting their international careers might conclude this October. In the event that this happens, India would be without two of their distinguished players in the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

These speculations have been making rounds amid a cricket match-free period after the end of the England Test series and before the start of the Asia Cup in September in the UAE. A Dainik Jagran report suggested that if Kohli and Sharma aim to extend their careers till 2027, they would need to partake in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, a domestic List A tournament in India, to stay eligible for game selection. The implication of this requirement led to speculation about the potential retirement of the duo.

However, an anonymous BCCI source clarified that the board is not concerned about the future of Kohli and Sharma at the moment. Instead, they are solely focused on the forthcoming Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup next year.

The BCCI source further mentioned that any potential plans of Kohli and Sharma would be communicated to the board just like they did before the England Test tour. The primary focus right now is building a strong team for the Asia Cup T20 tournament.

Additionally, the report rejected rumors regarding the BCCI offering Kohli and Sharma a farewell match in Sydney on October 25, with the BCCI confirming that no such discussions have taken place. Both Kohli and Rohit played their last match for the Indian team in the Champions Trophy, which India won earlier this year in the UAE. However, they have been out of competitive cricket since the end of the Indian Premier League.
