BCCI Advised to Prioritize Younger Cricketers Over Kohli, Sharma

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been urged to seriously consider phasing out Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma by former selector Devang Gandhi. Gandhi’s comments came amid ongoing speculation about the future of the two cricketing superstars.

There are increasing concerns that the upcoming tour of Australia in October could signal the end of their illustrious careers. Initial hopes that Kohli and Sharma would feature in the 2027 World Cup for India are gradually fading, given that they will be 40 and 39 respectively at the event.

Rumours have been fueled by various media reports, including one from the Dainik Jagran stating the Australian One Day International series might be their final appearance in Indian colours unless they participate in the next Vijay Hazare Trophy. Meanwhile, a PTI report cited an unknown source claiming no such discussions have occurred and any decisions regarding Sharma and Kohli would only materialize following next year’s T20 World Cup.

According to Gandhi, the BCCI must prepare for a future without the two stalwarts, due to the emergence of young talents poised to dominate One Day Internationals. Gandhi stressed the importance of nurturing these emerging players, stating, “How will you make players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Sai Sudharshan sit out when they have shown how well they can adapt?” He added that it is critical that selectors and team management work together to make these decisions.

Gandhi also warned about the potential of young talent being overlooked: “If, say, in a year’s time, we come to a situation where one of them is not firing and we need a replacement, the team management may not have enough time to prepare a player for the job.” He concluded by acknowledging the significant contributions of Sharma and Kohli to Indian cricket but reminded that, ultimately, “time doesn’t wait for anybody”.
