Bengals Reserve Burrow Following Preseason Scare: NFL Updates

The Cincinnati Bengals have decided to bench their player, Joe Burrow, after a preseason scare. This decision was taken in light of criticism over the risks of playing the team’s high-value quarterback during the August games. The Bengals will also be without starting left guard, Cordell Volson, for the season. Burrow has experienced three sacks in Monday’s game versus Washington Commanders and won’t be playing against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday.

Joe Burrow’s preseason plays have stirred controversy. He played two series against Philadelphia Eagles and three drives against Washington in the past week. On one occasion, instead of safely sliding, he risked an extension of a scramble and was overwhelmed by three defenders. Head coach Zac Taylor, while acknowledging the risky move, defended his approach, stating that such situations are learning opportunities for players.

Despite leading four touchdowns in five preseason drives, Burrow will not be seen playing as per Coach Taylor’s statement. Cincinnati Bengals have hence decided to keep their quarterback off the field until the match against Cleveland on 7th September.

Adding to the challenges, Cordell Volson’s season-ending injury has brought more trouble to the Cincinnati Bengals. The team has reported that Volson would undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder after an accident at the practice held on the 15th of August. With inconsistent season metrics in the past and a weak ranking in pass-blocking grade, Volson’s absence might pose significant drawbacks for the team.

This season is critical for the Bengals as they have previously missed the postseason twice in a row after reaching the AFC Championship in 2022. Some analysts believe that the team might be wasting Burrow’s prime years due to defensive lapses and line issues. Given these setbacks, the team cannot afford any more disruptions. However, Coach Taylor insists that the team is ready for the challenge and looking forward to their opening game against Cleveland on 7th September.
