Bill Guerin Speaks on Lane Hutson’s Potential Selection for Team USA | NHL News”

The young defenseman of the Montreal Canadiens, Lane Hutson, is one of the 44 players competing for a spot on Team USA’s 2026 Winter Olympics roster. 21-year-old Hutson has impressed many with his performance in the NHL. However, his participation in the Olympics is still uncertain.

Bill Guerin, the GM of Team USA, acknowledged Hutson’s ability, but pointed out the stiff competition. Guerin described Hutson as a good player, but also acknowledged that “we only have room for so many players”. Though initially eliminated from the August orientation camp, Hutson was added to the initial roster afterwards. However, the final selection will be influenced by the experience and depth of the team.

Despite the tough competition, Hutson’s impressive performances have caught a lot of attention. Following a rookie season where he scored 66 points and won the Calder Trophy, Hutson has already accumulated 5 points in 7 games this season. His excellent form on the ice might make the selection very tough for Guerin especially considering possible injuries or changes in the lineup.

While Guerin did not totally rule him out from the Winter Olympics, he alluded to the unpredictability of injuries. He raised concerns about the availability of Matthew Tkachuk and Brady Tkachuk. Hutson’s competition includes elite defenders Charlie McAvoy, Adam Fox, Quinn Hughes, and Zach Werenski. However, Hutson’s rapid growth, quickness, and scoring ability put him in contention for a place on the team.

Although the GM pointed out that it might not be Hutson’s time yet, his progress is hard to overlook. Whether he makes it to the 2026 Olympic roster or not, Hutson’s remarkable rise is a promising sign for his future career.
