Stan Bowman’s skill in building strong defensive units during his 15-year stint with the Chicago Blackhawks is well-known. He has consistently opted for puck-moving defensemen, from establishing figures such as Duncan Keith, to later signings like Niklas Hjalmarsson, Brian Campbell, Nick Leddy, and Johnny Oduya.

Recently, Alec Regula joined the Edmonton Oilers through a waiver claim by Stan Bowman. According to the Oilers Now September episode, Regula has shown significant improvement during camp after missing the 2023–24 season due to a knee injury. Despite his year off, there’s potential for him to be moved to the minors, but the Oilers must tread lightly or risk losing him to another team via waivers.

Former NHL general manager and player agent Brian Lawton joined the discussion on Oilers Now, offering optimistic insight into the Oilers’ defense. He sees Bowman’s focus on puck-moving players and believes he might be planning improvements for the trade deadline.

Edmonton prospect expert Bruce Curlock views Regula as a “tweener” player, suggesting he could fill various roles depending on how his skating develops. He compared Regula to another Oilers defender, noting similarities but also highlighting Regula’s superior passing ability.

Regula’s professional journey has had various challenges, including a stint in the Chicago Blackhawks system and injury-related obstacles. Following successful recovery, the 2024–25 season will be a critical one for him. Edmonton must make the strategic decision to either include him in the NHL lineup, which may necessitate moving a veteran player, or allow him to gain experience in Bakersfield with more on-ice time.

Despite uncertainties, Regula aligns with Bowman’s favored player mold: a tall, right-shooting defenseman capable of efficiently moving the puck. Whether this translates to his success remains to be seen.
