Bumrah Updates Agarkar on His Asia Cup Status Prior to Team Selection
On Tuesday, August 19, the All India Men’s Senior Selection Committee, including Ajit Agarkar, will convene to select the 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. Ahead of this key meeting, Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has confirmed his availability for the tournament. This is a significant boost for the team and its leadership that includes head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav.
Jasprit Bumrah has only participated in three tests during the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy. He has already expressed his intention to the selectors to play in the Asia Cup, so it is expected that he will be named to the squad. India’s opening match of the Asia Cup will be on September 10 against the UAE. The team will then play a much-anticipated match against Pakistan in Dubai on September 14.
Jasprit Bumrah has faced criticism from former Indian cricketers for not playing in all five tests of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. Before the series, it was announced that he would only play three games due to workload management. This decision attracted scrutiny, particularly after India’s win at the Oval without him.
Concerns have been raised about Bumrah’s fitness due to his injury history. He played all five Tests against Australia in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy but suffered a back spasm in the final Test, which ruled him out of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. Consequently, he also missed the initial matches of the IPL 2025 season for the Mumbai Indians.
Sanjay Manjrekar, former Indian batter, suggested that the team’s management should consider players who can play more consistently. He stated that motivating and eager players should sometimes be chosen over highly skilled players for the overall health of the team.
