Indiana Fever’s star rookie, Caitlin Clark, will not be playing in tonight’s game against the Connecticut Sun due to an ongoing groin injury. The team’s latest injury report on August 16 confirmed Clark’s absence, as she has been sidelined since July 15 due to the persistent injury. Despite having recently returned to light workouts, Clark has not yet rejoined full team practices and will remain out of competitive action until she does so.

This right groin issue has resulted in her missing 12 straight games. She initially suffered the injury during Indiana’s July 15 win over Connecticut. Fever’s head coach Stephanie White has emphasized that they will prioritize Clark’s long-term health over rushing her back to the court.

Earlier projections suggested Clark might return by August 12, but she has not made it back to the court yet. Current reports suggest a possible return date of August 26 against the Seattle Storm, but nothing has been confirmed yet. The Indiana Fever’s medical team will continue to monitor her progress carefully and ensure she meets all the required recovery benchmarks before she resumes playing.

This injury and subsequent absence from the court have added further challenges to what has already been a difficult rookie season for Clark. Despite playing only 13 games so far, she was averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists (which is the second-best in the WNBA), and 5.0 rebounds before her injury. Her playmaking ability has significantly improved Indiana’s offense, and her absence is being felt throughout the team.

Indiana Fever’s backcourt troubles have been worsened by the loss of two more guards: Aari McDonald is out with a broken right foot, and Sydney Colson will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL. The team has signed veteran Odyssey Sims on a hardship contract to fill out the roster as they scramble to maintain a consistent lineup and remain in playoff contention.

Despite her injury, Clark still holds one of the league’s top assist averages, only behind Phoenix’s Alyssa Thomas. This underlines how critical she is to the success of Indiana’s Fever. The team’s record with Clark is 8-5 and without her is 10-10.

Speaking about the injury, Clark acknowledged that the recovery process has been both mentally and physically demanding. She confessed to having never really dealt with injury before. “It’s probably been a challenge in itself because when I was first feeling pain, I didn’t understand it” she said in a recent podcast. It remains uncertain when Clark will return to the court, but the Indiana Fever is prioritizing her long-term future and patiently awaiting her return.
