Carolina Hurricanes rehire Jesper Fast post retirement for developmental role | NHL News Times of India”
The Carolina Hurricanes recently announced that their former winger, Jesper Fast, is coming back to the organization as a development coach after his retirement from the NHL. Fast, whose career ended abruptly due to a neck injury in the 2023-24 season, will now be responsible for nurturing the club’s next generation of talents.
The 33-year-old is expected to initiate his coaching career in the upcoming 2025-26 season. Fast’s playing career concluded prematurely following a neck injury that necessitated surgery and kept him out of the game through the 2024-25 season. Despite aspirations of a comeback, he declared his retirement in June 2025.
Fast’s shift to a coaching role keeps him affiliated with the Carolina squad, marking his sixth season with the organization. Fast initially signed with the Hurricanes back in 2020 with a three-year contract worth $6 million and then agreed to a $4.8 million extension for two years in 2023.
Fast, who is known for his top-notch skating ability, good sense of the game, and penalty-killing skills, established a reputation as a dependable two-way forward throughout his career. Fast was initially a sixth-round draft pick by the New York Rangers in 2010. Over 11 seasons, he played 703 NHL games, recording 91 goals and 248 points.
In his new role, Fast will work closely with Carolina’s prospects to develop new talent by using his own speed and defensive instincts as a teaching tool. Fast joins fellow coaches Daniel Bochner and Kevin McCarthy, who are under the authority of Peter Harrold, the team’s director of player development.
Fast’s transition from the ice to the bench signifies both an ending and a new start. Despite his career being shortened by injury, his transition to a development coach ensures his attributes like speed, work ethic, and hockey IQ will continue to make an impact on the Hurricanes. With Fast, the organization not only gets a well-experienced former player, but also a mentor ready to shepherd its talent for future seasons.
