China Defeats India in Asia Cup Final, Women’s Hockey Dominance Asserted
The Chinese women’s hockey team continues to show its dominance in Hangzhou, with its latest feat being the Asia Cup victory. The victory not only solidifies their position but also qualifies them for the 2026 World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium. However, the win was not devoid of disappointment as it crushed the hopes of the Indian team, led by Salima Tete, as they lost in the final 1-4 and had to settle for a silver medal.
Navneet Kaur scored the only goal for India at the 1st minute. On the other hand, Chinese players – Ou Zixia (21st minute), Li Hong (41st minute), Zou Meirong (51st minute), and Zhong Jiaqi (53rd) – scored for the home team, proving the challenging competition from the world’s No.4 ranked team.
The Indian team, ranked 9th in the world, put up a brave fight and stood toe-to-toe against the Chinese for three quarters before losing momentum in the final 15 minutes, conceding two goals which resulted in their defeat. The team will now have a final chance to reach the grand event at the World Cup qualifiers in February-March.
The match played amidst heavy rain was fraught with energy, and India, despite an initial lead with a fantastic penalty corner (PC) through Navneet, eventually found it hard to maintain in front of relentless onslaught from the hosts. China’s constant attacks, and quick counterattack goals from Zou and Zhong in the final quarter sealed their victory.
In another match, Japan won the bronze after defeating South Korea 2-1.
