Columbus Blue Jackets secures Daemon Hunt with two-way contract | NHL Updates | Times of India
The Columbus Blue Jackets have formally signed defenseman Daemon Hunt to a two-way agreement for the 2025-26 season. Being the last unsigned restricted free agent of the team, Hunt, 23, brings NHL experience and AHL versatility to the roster.
Daemon was acquired from the Minnesota Wild in a trade for David Jiricek last November. He is projected to serve as a top recall option from the Cleveland Monsters while providing depth to the Blue Jackets’ defensive corps.
The signing is a strategic move for the Blue Jackets, who managed to retain most of their defensive lineup from the previous season, with the exception of Jack Johnson. The two-way deal made with Hunt provides Columbus with flexibility, as he can play in either the NHL or be assigned to the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters as necessary.
Hunt’s contract assures the Blue Jackets of having a dependable left-handed defenseman who can step up during injuries or lineup shifts. A 2020 third-round pick, Hunt finished his last season with the Monsters, scoring 2 goals and 12 assists in 48 games. Despite having limited NHL appearances, Hunt has shown potential.
Moving into 2025-26, although unlikely to secure an opening-night roster spot, he is considered to be the prime recall candidate should the team need reinforcements. The team will, however, face waivers if they wish to assign him to Cleveland.
Looking forward, Hunt will become a restricted free agent next summer, providing Columbus with an opportunity to assess his progress before making a long-term commitment. His combination of NHL experience, strong possession metrics, and AHL versatility makes him an important depth piece for the Blue Jackets for the 2025-26 season.
Hunt’s two-way deal boosts the Blue Jackets’ defensive depth whilst offering him a clear pathway to contribute at the NHL level. The Blue Jackets now conclude their offseason free-agent chapter with a completed defensive roster set for the season ahead.
