Connor McDavid’s Pursuit of Gretzky’s Record: Will the Oilers’ Leader Rewrite NHL History?

Connor McDavid’s Pursuit of Gretzky’s Record: Will the Oilers’ Leader Rewrite NHL History?

The career point total of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, standing at 2,857, has long been considered an unassailable record in NHL history. Over his 1,487 NHL games, “The Great One” scored 894 goals and made 1,963 assists, setting a standard during a time when scoring was at its peak.

However, Connor McDavid, the current captain of the Edmonton Oilers, has been making waves in modern offensive hockey. After 712 games, McDavid has tallied 361 goals and 721 assists for a total of 1,082 points – an extraordinary achievement when one considers the currently low-scoring environment of NHL.

Although McDavid’s impressive performance has started conversations about his possibility of breaking Gretzky’s points record, the figures reveal a daunting challenge. To outdo Gretzky’s 2,857 points, McDavid would need to accumulate another 1,775 points. Given his current scoring rate, McDavid would need to play over 14 more seasons, roughly 1,165 more games, without any significant slide in performance. This would mean maintaining his productivity into his early forties, akin to the prolific longevity of Alex Ovechkin’s career, which is a realistically tough prospect.

Though Gretzky’s all-time NHL record might appear to be unattainable, McDavid is on track to possibly claim a more reachable milestone – becoming the Edmonton Oilers’ all-time franchise points leader. Gretzky’s franchise record stands at 1,669 points. This means McDavid, who currently has 1,082 points, needs only 587 more points to surpass that, which he could potentially achieve in approximately five seasons.

However, the fulfillment of this target will heavily depend on his contract status. McDavid’s current contract is set to expire on July 1, 2026. An extension of this contract will be critical if McDavid aspires to hold this prestigious franchise record as a member of the Edmonton Oilers.

Regardless of whether McDavid manages to break Gretzky’s all-time points record, his legacy as one of the greatest scorers in the game is already cemented. His pursuit of Edmonton Oilers’ franchise history is definitely something to keep an eye on.
