Controversial Decision by LA Lakers to Keep Vincent and Vanderbilt Sparks Intense Discussions | NBA News Times of India
The controversial decision of the Los Angeles Lakers to retain Gabe Vincent and Jarred Vanderbilt has sparked lively discussions in the basketball world. The Lakers have been in the news this summer and have been connected with many stories ranging from superstardom to minor roster changes, including talks of potential moves that were not made.
Recently, it was disclosed that the Lakers declined a specific offer as they prepare for the 2025-26 NBA season. They had an opportunity to trade Gabe Vincent and Jarred Vanderbilt this offseason, as reported by NBA insider Sean Deveney of Athlon Sports. Both these players were regulars in the rotation in the previous year.
Miami Heat affiliate Gabe Vincent joined the Lakers in July 2023 and averaged 6.4 points per game in the last season. He has one more year left in an $11.5 million contract. Meanwhile, known for his defensive skills, Jarred Vanderbilt joined in February 2023 from the Utah Jazz but only played 36 matches last season because of an injury.
According to Deveney, rival teams made attempts to include Vincent and Vanderbilt in trade negotiations, yet the Lakers declined to accommodate both players for the time being. These negotiations took place earlier in the summer, before the training camp.
The Lakers are not planning any significant trades before the season kick-off as they seem almost prepared now, says Sean Deveney. Reports suggest this decision was made by the Lakers’ management, to observe the team’s performance before deciding on any major changes.
The Lakers made some additions to their team, including signing veteran guard Marcus Smart and center Deandre Ayton, a former member of the Portland Trail Blazers. Even LeBron James was rumored to be a part of the trade discussions earlier in the summer, however, no deal was finalized.
An executive from the Western Conference told Yardbarker, “They (the Lakers) have not been aggressively exploring the trade market.”
Despite this, the Lakers seem to believe that their current squad is competitive enough. With Gabe Vincent’s playoff experience and Jarred Vanderbilt’s defensive abilities, they are seen as great assets. Both players also have mid-level salaries, providing flexibility for potential trades in the future. By deciding not to move them now, the Lakers maintain flexibility for later in the season.
The Training camp commences in late September 2025 in Los Angeles, with the regular season starting in October. Until then, the Lakers plan to retain both Vincent and Vanderbilt and observe the team’s growth.
