Dallas Stars’ Key Queries: Bourque’s Progress, Gulutzan’s Comeback, and Lundkvist’s Opportunity | NHL News – Times of India
As the upcoming National Hockey League (NHL) season looms, unresolved issues prevail for the Dallas Stars as training camp is nearing. Matters such as emerging talent, coaching changes, and defensive depth will represent critical decisions that could potentially shape the Stars’ 2025–26 season.
Mavrik Bourque, the Stars’ 2020 first-round pick, gets a unique chance to potentially become a regular player for the second line after Mason Marchment was traded to the Seattle Kraken. During his rookie campaign, Bourque maintained an admirable performance of 25 points across 73 games, suggesting his theoretically potential consistent top-six production.
The reappointment of Glen Gulutzan as Dallas Stars’ head coach is also a significant shift for the team. During Gulutzan’s first stint as head coach from 2011 to 2013, the Stars were in the midst of rebuilding. Now, the team possesses playoff experience, a highly talented player roster, and championship potential. Gulutzan’s substantial experience under the guidance of many highly proficient NHL coaches and an improved Stars’ roster potentially enables him to have a substantially immediate impact.
The team intends to reevaluate its strategy after a disappointing scoring performance in last season’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. As Gulutzan has a range of highly skilled and emerging players at his disposal, his challenge will be to fine-tune the offense and reinforce defensive stability.
Lastly, Nils Lundkvist faces a critical season ahead in defense. Despite his peak in the NHL of playing 60 games in the 2022–23 season, he hasn’t established himself within the top-six of the Dallas team. With Cody Ceci and Mathew Dumba no longer with the Stars, Lundkvist has the path to secure more playing time if he can utilise the opportunity to become a reliable presence in the back end. A solid performance in the training camp and early-season games could solidify his role.
