World number eight Alex de Minaur expressed his determination on Friday to challenge Belgium as he strives to lead Australia to the Davis Cup finals for the fourth consecutive year.
His first challenge will be against Raphael Collignon, ranked 91st, in Saturday’s opening singles match at Sydney’s second-round qualifier.
“He’s going to come after me, and my task is to make his life difficult,” said De Minaur, who recently made it to the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows.
De Minaur is hopeful about starting strong on his home court that he loves. Meanwhile, Jordan Thompson will face Zizou Bergs in the other singles matchup.
Belgium hasn’t bested Australia in the past eight years and aims to reach the final eight for the first time since 2018.
“Zizou brings immense energy to the team,” said Belgium’s captain Steve Darcis. “With Raf’s new presence, I aim to support him as much as possible.”
