Defiant Gambhir, Gill Brush Off Referee’s Potential WTC Point Deduction Threat: ‘Victory is India’s Priority’
India achieved a thrilling victory over England by six runs at The Oval, despite a direct threat from the ICC match referee regarding potential deduction of World Test Championship (WTC) points. Both Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, and Shubman Gill, the captain, reportedly dismissed these concerns in favor of achieving a memorable win.
The match was a tense affair, with England requiring only 35 runs on the final day, and India seeking to achieve just four more wickets to tie the series 2-2. However, as the stakes on the field rose, so did those off the field.
The Indian team was reportedly informed by match referee Jeff Crowe that they were six overs away from the required rate at the start of the final day’s play. This would have resulted in the loss of four critical WTC points if India failed to out-bowl England and rectify their over-rate shortage.
This revelation prompted a strategic meeting within the Indian dressing room. The suggested switch in tactics was to bring in both spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar immediately to increase the over rate. However, this would have risked enabling England’s Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton to rapidly chase the target due to the lack of pace.
This led to Gambhir making a resolute decision. He allegedly declared, “I don’t care about the over rate. If we lose four points, so be it. We are playing to win.” Gill supported his coach, and the decision was made for fast bowlers Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj to keep attacking from both ends, ignoring potential over-rate penalties.
This strategy proved successful. Siraj dismissed both Smith and Overton, bringing India to the point of victory. A nerve-wracking climax ensued, with Siraj eventually dismissing Gus Atkinson, resulting in a remarkable Test victory. This strategy not only equalled the series but also scored India an essential 28 WTC points, while England lost two points for their own slow rate.
Following this win, India now ranks third in the WTC standings, behind Australia and Sri Lanka. The result also reinforces Gambhir’s firm, aggressive coaching style.
