End of Preparations: Premier League Kicks Off
Mumbai: Liverpool FC is gearing up to defend their domestic title for the first time since 1984, a feat they last achieved before England’s top-flight league was renamed the Premier League. The wait could end this Saturday as the new season of the prestigious competition kicks off.

With Jurgen Klopp’s groundwork as a foundation, Liverpool, under the guidance of Dutch manager Arne Slot, claimed a joint-record 20th league title in the 2024-25 season. Now, as they aim to defend their title for the first time in over forty years, they face the challenge with a refreshed squad.
They aren’t alone in their ambitious spending in the summer transfer window.
From the established Big 6 of England to the newly promoted Leeds United, Burnley, and Sunderland, the 20 Premier League clubs have collectively spent nearly $2 billion by August 14 to strengthen their squads for the upcoming season.
Liverpool has led the spending race, investing around €300 million. They shattered the British transfer record by paying Bayer Leverkusen $156 million for Florian Wirtz. Slot has welcomed new talents such as full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, as well as French striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. They replace Luis Diaz, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the unpredictable Darwin Nunez, and will offer support to aging yet crucial players Mohamed Salah (now 33) and Virgil van Dijk (34).
Discussions are reportedly ongoing for the acquisition of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
In Premier League history, only Manchester United, Chelsea, and Manchester City have successfully defended their titles—City being the four-time reigning champions as of last season’s beginning. Now, Liverpool aspires to join their ranks.
New Challenge for Pep
By Pep Guardiola’s elevated standards, the 2024-25 season was a major disappointment for Manchester City, finishing third and marking only the second time the Spaniard ended a season without a major trophy.
In a recent GQ magazine interview, Guardiola shared his plans to take a 15-year break once his tenure at City concludes, although he signed a new contract in November to stay until 2027.
Despite the departure of well-established stars Kevin de Bruyne and former captain Kyle Walker, Guardiola has not been highly active in the transfer window. However, they regain the talent of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, now back from a long-term injury.
Meanwhile, Ruben Amorin at Manchester United is pursuing another significant rebuild.
The 20-time English champions (with a record 13 in the Premier League) have struggled in title challenges since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013. Last season, they slumped to 15th place, facing potential relegation threats.
Scoring fewer goals than almost all teams, including the relegated trio, prompted a major overhaul. Over €200 million was spent bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko to revamp the attack.
London Calling
Arsenal, consistently finishing as runners-up for the past three seasons, aim to bolster their goal-scoring ability. Last year, they drew 14 games—only behind Everton—indicating the need for more goals.
They invested heavily in Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres to lead the attack, alongside midfield reinforcements Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, and Christian Nørgaard. Overall, Arsenal has spent over €200 million.
Chelsea, their cross-city rivals, also spent significantly. The London club impressed in the FIFA Club World Cup final, defeating Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in July. Coach Enzo Maresca experimented with strategies, showcasing a potent attack that sometimes shifted to a 3-2-5 formation.
To enhance their forward line, Chelsea signed newcomers Liam Dilap and Joao Pedro.
While Chelsea clinched silverware ahead of the season, Tottenham Hotspur fell short, losing the UEFA Cup to PSG on penalties last Thursday.
Like United, Spurs endured a lackluster domestic season, placing 17th—just above relegation. Yet, they triumphed in the Europa League, securing a spot in the Champions League.
The Europa League victory marked Son Heung-min’s last competitive match for Spurs.
Under new manager Thomas Frank, who arrived from Brentford, Spurs is busy rebuilding with key additions like Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United and Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich. Joao Palhinha, on loan from the German club, could also play a crucial role.
Currently, English football is a narrative of three cities, yet Newcastle United and Aston Villa draw interest, having earned places in European competition this year.
As the preseason rebuilding phase concludes, the 34th Premier League season is set to commence.
