Haaland’s early goal in the first half gave City a third victory in their last four Premier League matches.

The 25-year-old has scored 12 goals in nine appearances across all competitions this season, in addition to six goals in two matches for Norway. Tottenham is the only team to have kept him from scoring in the current campaign.

Despite a second-half challenge, City moved up to fifth place in the Premier League.

“He has been crucial for us this season,” said City manager Pep Guardiola. “While we need more goals from others, opportunities are there.”

Guardiola’s squad is unbeaten in their last seven matches across all competitions since their defeat at Brighton in August.

Currently trailing Arsenal by three points, City enters the international break with increased momentum after a slow start to the season.

A concern for Guardiola is Rodri’s first-half exit due to a suspected hamstring injury. The Spanish midfielder has been struggling since his return after anterior cruciate ligament surgery during the summer.

Rodri, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2024 for his outstanding performance, played for only an hour against Monaco after missing City’s previous two matches. “Hopefully, it’s not serious,” Guardiola commented on Rodri’s injury.

Previously, Haaland showcased his typical clinical prowess during a 2-2 draw at Monaco, where City’s lead slipped due to a late equalizer.

City avoided repeating their European slip-up, achieving Guardiola’s 250th Premier League victory, which took him only 349 matches. In comparison, both Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and Arsene Wenger at Arsenal needed over 400 matches to reach this milestone.

“It’s an honor to join Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger,” stated Guardiola. “I’ll invite them to a nice dinner.”

“It’s a pleasure to be part of Premier League history. I’m really happy. Now let’s aim for another 250 wins!”

Surprisingly, Guardiola opted not to field Belgian winger Jeremy Doku, despite his strong start to the season.

Haaland Conquers First Goal Drought

Even without Doku, City dominated the first half.

Josko Gvardiol missed an early opportunity, heading the ball directly at Brentford’s goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, from Phil Foden’s corner.

Haaland sought his first Premier League goal at the Gtech Community Stadium. Along with Anfield, these were the only venues where he had not scored in the top tier.

The Norwegian striker ended his scoring drought on Brentford soil within nine minutes.

A long pass from Gvardiol caught Brentford defenders Sepp van den Berg and Nathan Collins off-guard, allowing Haaland to finish powerfully past Kelleher.

Haaland’s performance in London remains exceptional, with 21 league goals in 22 matches in the English capital.

Rodri’s return from injury took a hit when he limped off the field in the 22nd minute.

Despite Rodri’s injury, City persisted. Oscar Bobb created an opportunity for Foden, who failed to capitalize.

Brentford launched a strong attack immediately after the break.

Igor Thiago outpaced City’s defenders but failed to deliver as Gianluigi Donnarumma made a crucial save.

City’s hold on the game weakened, while Brentford posed additional threats with Kevin Schade’s cross, narrowly missing Michael Kayode.

Kayode’s long throws caused some challenges for City’s defense, but they held on to secure a vital victory.
