Fact Check: Did Andy Pycroft Really Apologize to Pakistan’s…
The Pakistan cricket team threatened to pull out from the Asia Cup ahead of a match against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) but then retracted that threat. This culminated in a dramatic day in Dubai, with the Pakistani team awaiting instructions from the Pakistan Cricket Board in Lahore, and causing an hour’s delay to the match. They took to the field only after receiving an “apology” from match referee Andy Pycroft.
As per the Pakistan Cricket Board, Pycroft, from Zimbabwe, tendered an “apology for miscommunication” during the last India-Pakistan match where the Indian captain, Suryakumar Yadav, refused to shake hands with his counterpart Salman Ali Agha as a gesture of solidarity with the victims of a terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
The Pakistan Cricket Board lodged two separate complaints with the International Cricket Council (ICC), demanding the removal of Pycroft, but both complaints were rejected. The Pakistan Cricket Board threatened to withdraw from the Asia Cup in retaliation, refused to leave the team hotel, and created chaos. This situation was only resolved after negotiations with the ICC and a meeting with Pycroft.
The Pakistan Cricket Board claimed that Pycroft had apologized, but this has not been confirmed. In fact, the ICC has reiterated that Pycroft had not violated any code of conduct rules.
It seems that the dispute began when Pycroft allegedly prohibited the captains of the two teams from shaking hands during the India-Pakistan match. This was denied by Pycroft who stated the incident was a result of miscommunication and there was no apology made. Meanwhile, the ICC expressed its readiness to investigate the alleged violation of the Code of Conduct during the match.
In conclusion, Andy Pycroft did not “apologize” to Pakistan as claimed by the Pakistan Cricket Board. The aim of the meeting between Pycroft, Salman Ali Agha, team manager Naveed Akram Cheema, and coach Mike Hesson was to clear any possible miscommunication. That’s according to sources who are close to the matter. The video of the meeting shared by the Pakistan Cricket Board has all the individuals concerned, but the audio has been muted. The ICC has insisted that Pycroft followed the code of conduct fully and officials cannot be changed as per the demands of a team as it would set a precedent. Pakistan eventually played the match against UAE with Pycroft as the match referee.
