FIFPro Criticizes ISL Clubs: FIFA Urged to Address Salary Suspensions and Player Uncertainty
Updated on: August 15, 2025, 05:57 PM IST
Odisha FC and Chennaiyin FC have enacted a ‘force majeure’ clause, suspending all contracts for players and staff.
FIFPro, the global union for football players, has criticized Indian Super League (ISL) clubs for their ‘unlawful suspension’ of contracts belonging to players. A formal email has been sent to FIFA by FIFPro, urging intervention. This action comes after several players lodged complaints via the Football Players Association of India (FPAI) about suspended salaries pending clarity on the 2025-26 ISL season.

The Telegraph reports that the FIFPro email highlights, “Unfortunately, there is currently no clear roadmap for upcoming competition kick-off dates and schedules, nor financial stability, which is critical for all stakeholders, especially the players we represent.”

FIFPro’s email continues, “Numerous players have approached us and our members to report unilateral suspensions of their contracts by participating ISL clubs. These suspensions, drastically violating players’ labor rights, combined with existing uncertainty about the ISL’s near future, have left players facing severe distress. Their livelihoods and careers are at stake.”
Bengaluru FC has indefinitely halted salary payments to first-team players and staff. Similar to Odisha FC, Chennaiyin FC has also invoked a ‘force majeure’ clause, voiding all player and staff contracts.
The FIFPro email further requests, “We would appreciate any clarification or action you could urgently take to resolve this situation. FIFA cannot continue to overlook this pressing issue affecting numerous individuals globally.”
FPAI’s Comment
The FPAI told The Telegraph, “Indeed, we have reached out to FIFPro regarding the ongoing situation in India. Our aim is to support our players during these uncertain times. Every one of them has families and financial responsibilities, and sadly, the current state has left each player worried about their careers.”
