Fortifying Defense: India’s Path to Progress

India’s men’s hockey team ends a seven-match losing streak with a 4-3 win over Belgium, led by Harmanpreet Singh’s penalty stroke.
Harmanpreet Singh could finally smile as his 59th-minute penalty stroke secured the Indian men’s hockey team a 4-3 victory against Belgium in Antwerp, ending a seven-match losing streak.

India traveled to Europe in late May, positioned third in the FIH Pro League with promising prospects of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. With the Netherlands and Belgium as hosts, and Australia qualifying as previous winners, Harmanpreet’s team had a solid chance to advance directly by finishing at least fourth.
Unfortunately, misfortunes and last-minute nerves led to India’s worst Pro League campaign, finishing 8th out of nine teams, narrowly avoiding relegation. India’s forwards and penalty corners were on target with strikers Abhishek, Mandeep Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, and Dilpreet regularly scoring, alongside skipper Harmanpreet.
In four of the seven losses, India had initially led, even taking a 2-0 lead against Australia.
The primary issue was defense, particularly in crucial moments, despite experienced players like Harmanpreet, Amit Rohidas, and Sumit. Coach Craig Fulton’s “defend to win” strategy fell short, with the team losing six of seven away games in the final quarter, four of them in the last five minutes.
“India was unlucky,” noted Belgian coach Shane McLeod. “They played well except for last-minute goals. They excel in critical tournaments like the Olympics and Asian Games. The team’s development and the opposition’s nature affect outcomes, so a focused defense will be crucial,” he added.
The Asia Cup in Rajgir, Bihar, in August-September presents another opportunity, and India, dominating Asia, cannot be complacent. Tough competitions from Malaysia and China in past finals indicate challenges for Harmanpreet’s squad.
“Not achieving our goals despite playing well hurts,” stated India’s vice-captain Hardik Singh. “We need to focus on finishing strong, tightening defense, and optimizing scoring chances.”
