Goff and St. Brown Star, as Lions Roar to a 52-21 Victory over Johnson’s Bears.
In a thrilling football match, the Detroit Lions, led by quarterback Jared Goff, bounced back with a resounding 52-21 victory over the Chicago Bears. Goff demonstrated an exceptional performance, throwing for 334 yards and equaling his career-record of five touchdowns. His distinct connection with Amon-Ra St. Brown saw three scores credited to the receiver.
The Lions had previously lost an opener at Green Bay, but under the leadership of coach Dan Campbell, they have successfully avoided back-to-back regular-season losses in the last two and a half years.
The Bears struggled to find their footing and ended the first half with a 28-14 deficit, largely due to two turnovers. This defeat proved a tough one for coach Ben Johnson, who was returning to the city where he first carved a name for himself as a top NFL coaching candidate. The Bears also surrendered four sacks, committed eight penalties, and failed twice when they had possession of the ball.
Chicago’s Caleb Williams completed 19 of 30 passes for 207 yards, throwing two touchdowns to Rome Odunze. However, Williams, who was picked number one in last year’s NFL draft held in Detroit, threw an inopportune pass that ended in an interception and was sent off midway through the final quarter.
Meanwhile, Goff, who perfectly completed 23 of 28 passes, guided last year’s highest-scoring team back on track. With plays called by offensive coordinator John Morton, Goff steered the ball to Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery in the running game, and to Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams in the air.
As the game progressed, the Lions saw an opportunity and took advantage of an unusual situation that saw six seconds added to the clock just before halftime. This led to an exceptional pass by Goff to St. Brown, extending Detroit’s lead to 14 points as they headed into half time. St. Brown finished the game with nine catches for 115 yards, while Williams made two for a total of 108 yards, which included a spectacular 44-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
Lions’ Gibbs and Montgomery combined for 151 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Both teams saw their share of injuries during the game. While the Bears will host Dallas on Sept. 21, the Lions are set to play at Baltimore on Sept. 22.
