Gretzky’s Legacy in Crossfire: Trump’s Trade War with Canada Disrupts NHL
The legacy of Wayne Gretzky, revered widely as a national hockey icon, is being pulled into controversy amidst the ongoing trade war between the U.S and Canada, spearheaded by President Donald Trump.
Brantford, Ontario, Gretzky’s hometown still reeling in the glory of its favorite son, now has to brace for unexpected economic upheavals following the U.S’s imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods. The trade actions by Trump have triggered consequences that have started to affect the local businesses and residents; even the legacy of Gretzky isn’t immune to the ripple effects.
Local businesses in Brantford are particularly apprehensive about the economic fallout from the U.S tariffs. Graeme Roustan, the owner of the venerable Roustan Hockey company, expressed consternation about the sudden trade restrictions. According to Roustan, the company, in operation for 178 years now, has been engaging in product selling and trading with the U.S before Canada even came into existence. In the wake of the newly imposed 25% tariff on finished hockey sticks earmarked for U.S customers, Roustan and his counterparts are hastening their shipments to circumvent the extra costs.
The economy of Brantford, closely tied to cross-border trade, is particularly susceptible to the tariffs. The city’s Mayor Kevin Davis has highlighted the fact that some local businesses get up to 80% of their products sold in the U.S while also being dependent on American suppliers for raw materials. Nevertheless, Davis was upbeat about the city’s resilience and ready to resist unnecessary trade wars.
Wayne Gretzky’s reputation has unfortunately been caught amidst this economic turmoil. His open association with Trump, including his appearance at the inauguration and seen sporting a MAGA hat, has evoked critical responses. Some outraged Canadians took to online platforms, venting out their disappointment and labelling him a “traitor”.
However, local fans in Brantford still have a balanced view. Fans like Rick Mannen, while attending a game at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre, wished for Gretzky to advise Trump to consider Canada as a partner rather than a country to be dominated.
Despite the challenges due to the tariffs, Brantford’s spirit of resilience is very much alive. There is a renewed emphasis on the consumption of locally manufactured products in an act of solidarity and support. Even amidst the political and economic uncertainties, the city continues to take pride in its iconic roots.
