Hellums’ Triple TDs and Last-Minute Score Leads Army to 24-21 Victory Against Kansas State
Cale Hellums proved instrumental for Army in their latest football matchup against Kansas State, scoring three touchdowns, including the decisive 14-yard touchdown run with just 2:52 remaining. This helped Army secure a three-point victory over Kansas State, finishing with a score of 24-21.
“I couldn’t have done it by myself,” Hellums commented on his stellar performance, stating that the tremendous support from his team, both on defense and offense, played a major role in their overall success.
Kansas State’s hopes were dashed when Avery Johnson threw an interception just past the midfield, sealing the game’s result. This marked the 10th home nonconference loss for Kansas State since 1990.
Army’s dominant running strategy also caught attention as they kept the ball on the ground for 70 out of their 82 offensive plays, outgaining Kansas State in total yards, 332 to 247.
A major key to Army’s win was their 6 out of 7 success on fourth down. Hellums himself completed 7 of 11 passes and made 41 carries, netting 124 yards in the process. He scored two touchdowns, one via a pass and one via a run, and added the fateful third in the closing minutes of the game.
However, the game was not without its tensions. Kansas State managed to regain lead at 21-14, following a 99-yard kickoff return by Bryce Noernberg. Army later managed to recover a squib kick, eventually inching their way back for a final 24-21 triumph.
Both teams can learn from this dramatic encounter. Next, Army has a break before playing North Texas on Sept. 20. Kansas State will face Arizona on Friday. Despite being in the same conference, this game is counted as a nonconference match.
