India vs Japan Asia Cup Match Recap

On a blistering hot and humid Sunday in Rajgir, the Indian and Japanese hockey teams faced each other in an Asia Cup clash. The players were concerned about the afternoon heat, but a welcoming cloud cover eventually provided some respite for the 22 athletes at the Bihar Sports University Hockey Stadium.

As the weather conditions improved, so did India’s performance. Following a shaky start in their Pool A opener against China, which they won 4-3, the team led by Harmanpreet Singh managed to deliver a slightly better performance by beating Japan 3-2, thus securing their place in the Super 4s.

The Indian defense was tighter, allowing fewer circle penetrations, although the team missed several scoring opportunities. Notably, forwards Mandeep Singh and Abhishek missed chances that they would typically convert, which could have further boosted India’s confidence and scoreline.

Harmanpreet Singh, who scored a hat-trick in the opener, was instrumental once again, scoring two goals (5th, 46th minute) after Mandeep Singh opened the scoring in the 4th minute. For Japan, Kosei Kawabe scored twice (38th, 59th minute). “The first priority has been achieved, but we still need to do better, and when it clicks, it will come,” said India’s head coach, Craig Fulton.

India started strongly, scoring twice in the first five minutes to establish their dominance. Forward Sukhjeet Singh set up Mandeep Singh for the first goal, and a penalty corner that followed saw Harmanpreet Singh double the lead with a powerful shot.

Japan responded with a counterattack and a penalty corner, but India maintained its lead by defending resolutely, particularly through Jarmanpreet Singh and Vivek Sagar Prasad, whose defensive efforts kept the score intact during a series of penalty corners.

Kawabe finally put Japan on the scoreboard in the third quarter with a well-placed shot. Despite Japan’s increased aggression in search of an equalizer, India continued to maintain possession and eventually restored their two-goal lead with another goal from Harmanpreet Singh.

In the final quarter, India’s second goalkeeper, Suraj Karkera, displayed exceptional skills with acrobatic saves during a penalty corner. Although Kawabe managed to score again for Japan, reducing the deficit, India maintained its lead. A yellow card for Harmanpreet Singh in the last minute couldn’t prevent 10-man India from holding on to victory.

India’s final group match is against Kazakhstan on Monday evening. “It will make a big difference. You don’t really play in such hot weather and humidity; it’s really tough. It was a good challenge,” said Fulton regarding the scheduling.
