India Stuns Oman to Secure Third Place in CAFA Nations Cup
NEW DELHI: Demonstrating resilience during a challenging period, India’s football team edged past Oman in a penalty shootout to claim third place in the CAFA Nations Cup held in Hisor, Tajikistan, on Monday.

In a significant boost to coach Khalid Jamil in his debut assignment, India overcame a goal deficit to equalize as regular time concluded with a 1-1 draw. The deadlock remained unbroken after extra-time, which also saw Oman’s defender Ali Al Busaidi sent off in the 96th minute. India eventually triumphed 3-2 in the penalty shootout, securing a commendable third place finish.
Though the tournament matches lacked official status or ranking points, Jamil can take pride in his 133rd ranked team’s fighting spirit against Oman, the world’s 79th ranked team. This victory marked India’s first win over the Gulf nation in 31 years.
India had dealt with scrutiny over their attacking capabilities following their group-stage matches. However, they displayed resilience against tournament favorites Iran, ultimately conceding two late goals in a 3-0 group stage defeat.
On Monday, Oman took the lead through Jameel Al Yahmadi’s goal in the 55th minute, a deft flick by Abdullah Fawaz from inside the box, which was tapped in at the far post.
Earlier, India missed a chance in the 16th minute when Muhammed Uvais’ long throw was headed by Nikhil Prabhu, only for defender Anwar Ali’s headed effort to be saved by Oman’s goalkeeper Ibrahim Al Mukhaini.
Shortly after, Oman’s Nasser Al Rawahi squandered a chance, sending his effort wide. India missed an opportunity to take the lead before half-time when Irfan Yadwad couldn’t capitalize on Lallianzuala Chhangte’s cut-back.
Seeking a route back into the match, Jamil introduced midfielders Udanta Singh and Suresh Singh in the 78th minute. The substitutions paid immediate dividends with Udanta finding the equalizer in the 80th minute.
Rahul Bheke’s long throw was headed towards the far post by Danish Farooq, allowing Udanta to rush in and head the ball into the net upon bouncing. A video assistant referee reviewed possible infringements, but the goal stood.
In the penalty shootout, Chhangte, Rahul Bheke, and Jithin MS found the net, while Udanta missed, and Anwar Ali’s shot was saved. Oman’s Thani Al Rushaidi and Muhsen Al Ghassani scored, but Harib Al Saadi and Ahmed Al Kaabi missed. Oman’s final shot was crucial, and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made a diving save against Al Yahmadi, securing the win for India.
India led the shootout 2-0 after Al Saadi and Al Kaabi missed, but Oman was pulled back into contention after Al Mukhaini saved Anwar’s shot and Udanta missed. However, Sandhu’s crucial save sealed India’s bronze medal win.
In the final, Uzbekistan upset tournament favorites Iran 1-0, with Khozhiakbar Alizhonov scoring in the 120th minute.
