India’s Skyward Triumph: Asia Cup Final Awaits After China Sweep

India’s Victory over China in Asia Cup Hockey

Right from the start, India captain Harmanpreet Singh kicked off the game with a strategic aerial pass from the backline to Jarmanpreet Singh, positioned in the Chinese scoring area. Jarmanpreet skillfully maneuvered the ball to an open Shilanand Lakra, who successfully scored India’s first goal past China’s goalkeeper Wang Weihao during the final Asia Cup Super 4 match.

India’s intent was evident: counter China’s deep defense using an aerial strategy, which proved effective against the world No.22 team as India secured a decisive 7-0 victory.

Goal scorers included Lakra (4th minute), Dilpreet Singh (7th), Mandeep Singh (18th), Raj Kumar Pal (37th), Sukhjeet Singh (39th), and Abhishek (46th, 50th). Ranked world No.7, India secured a spot in the finals against defending champions South Korea.

“Our previous match against China didn’t go well, so we changed our strategy,” explained India defender Sumit, a dual Olympic bronze medalist. “We analyzed footage of our previous game and noticed China’s tight defense against our forwards. We opted for an aerial strategy, which worked for us.”

Previously, India narrowly defeated China 4-3 in their Asia Cup opener, struggling against their defensive tactics. However, on Saturday, Harmanpreet and his team turned the tables, dominating Chinese plays and showcasing the skills that won them bronze at the Paris Olympics.

India impressed not only with their long passes but also with their 3D skills, effectively dodging defenders and breaching China’s defenses at the Bihar Sports University Hockey Stadium.

Under Craig Fulton’s leadership, India’s defense was impenetrable, keeping the match largely in the Chinese half, thanks to impressive teamwork and strategic plays.

Key Players

Lakra initiated India’s scoring spree, followed by Dilpreet, contributing significantly to the offense alongside each other. They effectively disrupted the Chinese defense and provided key assists throughout the match.

The confidence gained from beating Malaysia (world No.12) 4-1 on Thursday buoyed India’s performance against China, dismantling their defenses.

Notably, a rebound from Harmanpreet’s drag-flick enabled Vivek Sagar Prasad to assist Mandeep in making the score 3-0. India controlled possession, creating opportunities for Pal and Sukhjeet to score subsequently.

Olympic standout Abhishek capped the victory in the final quarter with two goals, showcasing India’s offensive prowess.

The finals on Sunday will be crucial for Indian hockey, offering a chance to qualify for the World Cup as they face South Korea, a team they’ve yet to beat in this tournament. Fulton emphasized the focus on maintaining their strategy and improving their performance for the upcoming final.
