Luis Suarez Suspended After Spitting Incident
Inter Miami’s star striker Luis Suarez has been suspended for six games by the Leagues Cup Organising Committee. This decision follows Suarez spitting at a Seattle Sounders staff member after Inter Miami’s 3-0 defeat in the tournament final. The altercation occurred after the final whistle, leading to a brawl where Suarez lost his temper and had to be restrained by teammates and coaches.
During the chaos, Inter Miami’s Sergio Busquets also lashed out, throwing a punch at Seattle’s Obed Vargas, while defender Tomas Aviles behaved aggressively. As a result, Busquets received a two-match suspension, and Aviles a three-match ban for their involvement in violent conduct.
Seattle Sounders coaching staff member Steven Lenhart was likewise penalized with a five-match suspension, having breached Article 4.2.C of the League Cup 2025 Competition Regulations.
The official statement declared that fines would accompany all suspensions and that Major League Soccer (MLS) holds the right to levy additional disciplinary actions against those involved.
Luis Suarez’s Apology Unaccepted
Despite Suarez issuing a public apology for his actions, expressing regret over the negative image his behavior cast on his family and club, the suspension stands.
Inter Miami also released a statement denouncing the post-match incidents at the conclusion of the Leagues Cup Final.
As the League Cup comprises teams from MLS and Liga MX, the suspension will only be effective in the 2026 edition. Suarez and Busquets’ contracts with Inter Miami will expire at the season’s end.
