IPL Chairman Discusses Spectator Evacuation During Operation…

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has clarified India’s position on playing Pakistan in multi-nation tournaments. Speaking at the Playcom Business of Sports Summit 2025, Dhumal affirmed that India would only face Pakistan in ACC/ICC events, following government policy. His comments emerged amidst controversy surrounding India-Pakistan matches in the upcoming Asia Cup, scheduled for September 14 in Dubai.

This development follows new guidelines set by the Indian government regarding sporting engagements with Pakistan. The guidelines permit Indian teams and athletes to participate in international events featuring Pakistani participants but restrain them from engaging in bilateral competitions or events hosted in Pakistan.

Dhumal commented, “We are not going to play Pakistan, but we are going to play them in ACC/ICC events. So we will follow what the government says.” His stance may have been influenced by recent tensions and acts of terrorism that occurred between the nations in April.

Dhumal was instrumental in evacuating spectators during an IPL match amid the heated political situation between India and Pakistan. Amidst escalating tensions, the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was temporarily stopped, and the league paused. Dhumal walked onto the field and urged the crowd to conduct a peaceful exit. In a later interview, Dhumal stated that his priority was to ensure a calm evacuation without triggering panic.

Regarding Team India’s sponsorship situation, Dhumal affirmed that a new sponsor would be found within 2-3 weeks. India’s cricket team is currently playing the Asia Cup without a lead sponsor following Dream11’s withdrawal. BCCI has initiated the sponsorship selection process after Dream11 exited, prompted by regulation changes in India on real-money gaming.

He also noted the upcoming BCCI’s Annual General Meeting, scheduled for September 28, where elections for key positions, including the presidency, will take place.
