IPL Team Uniquely Boycotts India vs Pakistan Asia Cup Match:…
The upcoming 2025 Asia Cup cricket match between India and Pakistan, scheduled for September 14 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, has triggered controversy. Objections raising concerns about terrorism have been aired, with IPL team Punjab Kings even refraining from naming Pakistan in their social media match announcement.
The Supreme Court declined an urgent hearing into cancelling the match. The Punjab Kings’ avoidance of naming Pakistan in their match announcement on social media ignited such an uproar that the franchise had to disable comments on their available social media channels.
The petition submitted to the Supreme Court underscored major concerns related to India-Pakistan cricket relations. The plaintiffs argued that cricket matches with Pakistan communicated the wrong message, particularly following recent terror attacks such as Phalangam and Operation Sindoor, in which Indian soldiers lost their lives. The petition highlighted, “Cricket between nations is intended to demonstrate harmony and friendship. However, engaging in cricket with Pakistan after events like Phalagam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, sends a disparate message; we are celebrating sports with a country harboring terrorists while our soldiers lay down their lives.”
The petitioners expressed concerns about offending the sentiments of the families of terror victims. They underscored that the nation’s honor dignity and citizens’ security should be placed above entertainment. They claimed such cricket matches could potentially affect the morale of the armed forces and the country.
India-Pakistan cricket matches usually draw tremendous interest, not merely for the sports rivalry, but also because of the complicated political relations between the two countries. The forthcoming Dubai match continues to trigger debates about sports and politics in the subcontinent.
