Is a Nate Sudfeld Reunion on the Horizon for 49ers? QB3 Tryouts Announced.

The San Francisco 49ers are trying to fill their third and fourth quarterback spots after a series of shake-ups. According to recent reports, the team held tryouts for the slot on August 18th with several familiar names in attendance, hinting that they might be considering a return of previous players.

NBC analyst Matt Maiocco released the full list of tryout attendees, including Nate Sudfeld, who previously played for the 49ers up until 2021. Sudfeld had been outperformed for the third quarterback position by Brock Purdy who currently holds the initial quarterback slot alongside Mac Jones as a reinforcement.

Sudfeld has a career record of 6 games with 25 completed passes out of 37 attempts, totaling 188 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He spent several seasons with the Detroit Lions post 49ers, but was out of football in 2024.

The 49ers appear to be considering Sudfeld for one of the remaining spots along with potential wide receivers Jalen Guyton, J.J. Jones, and Colton Dowell.

The sudden void in the quarterback roster came after Tanner Mordecai, initially intended for the third spot, was let go following competition with Carter Bradley. However, following a round of consideration, Mordecai was invited back, underpinning the uncertainty surrounding those last slots.
