Jaismine Lamboria: A Journey from ‘Mini Cuba’ to Global…

Jaismine Lamboria, a boxer hailing from Bhiwani, Haryana, also known as ‘Mini Cuba’, recording a significant win at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool. She won the gold medal in the 57 kg category. Despite having faced setbacks and self-doubt during her journey, Lamboria triumphed in the shadow of boxing legends Teófilo Stevenson and Félix Savón, who made history by clinching three Olympic golds in the same weight division.

Lamboria commented on her journey, “Initially, I couldn’t handle the pressure and expectations. But now, as I am gradually becoming more experienced and playing more, I realize that the pressure should be about my performance, and not results,” she said. She expressed that the shift in focus to her performance helped her manage pressure and expectations better.

Even before the World Boxing Championships, Lamboria faced challenges such as the coronavirus pandemic, which took her about six to seven months to recover from fully. She also had a tough time mentally after losing a match at the Asian Games due to referee intervention. Nonetheless, Lamboria remained utterly resolute, focusing on moving past her difficulties. She declared, “The thought of giving up or quitting never crossed my mind.”

Hailing from a family with a boxing legacy, Lamboria was inspired by her uncles, Sandeep and Parvinder Lamboria, who won medals at national and international levels. Following in the footsteps of her great-grandfather, the legendary Hawa Singh, and being inspired by the successful Vijender Singh, Lamboria remains relentless within the boxing sphere. She believes her maturity gained post-Olympics contributed to her confidence and subsequent success at the World Championships.
