Jake Guentzel’s Confession Debunks Rumors of Joining Tampa Bay | NHL News Times of India
Jake Guentzel has finally put to rest rumors surrounding his rumored move to Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2024 NHL trade deadline. Despite being traded to the Carolina Hurricanes and later signing a seven-year, $63 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Guentzel has admitted he never intended it to be a temporary move.
When the Pittsburgh Penguins traded him to Carolina Hurricanes, Guentzel saw it as a new beginning rather than a short-term arrangement. He played a crucial role in helping the Hurricanes reach the Eastern Conference semi-finals, where they lost to the New York Rangers. Guentzel expressed his love for the team and the camaraderie they shared during his tenure, stating he had hoped to finalize a contract with the Hurricanes right after the playoffs.
However, the deal did not materialize, which led to Tampa Bay swooping in to acquire his rights just before free agency. In his debut season with the Lightning, Guentzel silenced critics with an impressive 80-point campaign (41 goals, 39 assists) in 80 games. He played a critical role in the team’s performance, counting the loss of their long-serving captain Steven Stamkos to Nashville.
While the Tampa Bay Lightning’s playoff run ended in the first round, Guentzel’s consistency was a standout feature of the team’s performance. It is clear that the Carolina Hurricanes missed out on securing a crucial player for their future. This re-emphasizes the point that they might have regretted not securing Guentzel when they had the opportunity.
