Jayden Daniels Shines Despite Commanders’ 31-17 Defeat to Bengals | NFL News Times of India
On Aug. 18, the Washington Commanders faced a 31-17 defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals at their preseason home opener at Northwest Stadium. Highlighted by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels’ promising performance, he produced a rushing touchdown covering 14 yards in his first drive. However, the game’s tone was marked by the lack of star wide receiver Terry McLaurin who is still demanding a new contract.
In his short debut, Daniels impressively led Washington in a four-play, 74-yard journey that concluded with his touchdown. Although Daniels didn’t attempt any pass, explosive runs from Deebo Samuel and Chris Rodriguez Jr. resulted in the touchdown. Expressing optimism about McLaurin’s absence, Daniels commented “I know he’ll be coming through the door soon.” Coach Dan Quinn backed this, noting McLaurin’s recent recovery from an ankle injury. The receiver was recently removed from the Physically Unable to Perform list but still hasn’t returned to practice.
Despite the sharp start from the offense, with seventh-round rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt scoring a 27-yard touchdown, the rest of the game was not as successful. Backups Josh Johnson and Sam Hartman managed only 85 passing yards and two interceptions, leading to a slowdown in the offensive attack.
McLaurin’s contract demands have stolen the spotlight, overshadowing the progress made. He seeks a deal worth more than $30 million annually, however, Washington is reportedly willing to offer closer to $28 million. This discrepancy led to McLaurin’s trade request on July 31. Despite this, he remains a crucial part of Washington’s passing game.
Facing a significant decision similar to the Bengals’ negotiations with their star pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, Washington must consider the impact of losing McLaurin. This move could hinder Daniels’ development and diminish the Commanders’ momentum after their NFC Championship Game run the previous year.
The Bengals, on the other hand, relied on their strong reserves during the game. Joe Burrow led two scoring drives within three series, despite taking a couple of worrisome sacks. Cincinnati’s depth was decisive, with former Washington receiver, Mitchell Tinsley, catching five passes for 73 yards and scoring two touchdowns in the first half. Rookie linebacker Barrett Carter and safety Tycen Anderson each recorded interceptions to secure the victory.
Washington is now set to face the Baltimore Ravens in their third preseason game on the upcoming Saturday at 12 p.m. ET. Whether or not McLaurin will return to the team by then remains the most pressing question.
