Jonathan Kuminga’s Audacious Assertion Ignites NBA Talks, Compares Self to Cade Cunningham, Scottie Barnes
Jonathan Kuminga has stirred up the NBA this summer with a bold claim that he is on the same level as Cade Cunningham and Scottie Barnes. The Golden State Warriors forward believes he should be securing the same contract talks and future value as these two top players. His view has sparked debate within the league with fans and analysts questioning his true standing.
In August, Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle shared a report that Kuminga, just 22, should get the same contract as Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons and Barnes of the Toronto Raptors. Both of these players were top picks in the 2021 NBA Draft and have already signed rookie extensions worth over $200 million each. Kuminga, however, who was also a part of this draft (picked seventh overall by the Warriors), has not yet secured a similar contract.
Kuminga’s belief comes at a difficult time. Despite showing potential and even winning an NBA title with the Warriors in 2022, his role within the team has been inconsistent. He has averaged modest numbers compared to Cunningham and Barnes, both of whom are central to their respective teams.
The Warriors offered Kuminga a smaller deal – a two-year contract worth $45 million. Another option suggested was the $7.9 million qualifying offer, but Kuminga and his representatives want more, creating a stalemate.
Social media was quick to react to this news. Responses suggested that Kuminga’s self-belief is too high, with one fan writing, “Where is he getting this confidence from?” Others criticized his comparison to Cunningham, telling him to “stay in his lane.”
The Golden State Warriors, who already faced pressure after falling short in their last title chase, now have to deal with added tension due to Kuminga’s stance. Cunningham has become the face of the Detroit Pistons and Barnes has taken charge in Toronto, winning NBA Rookie of the Year in 2022. They have their contracts and roles secure. Kuminga is still fighting for that space in Golden State, and it remains to be seen whether his belief is warranted, or if it’s a risk that could damage his position with the Warriors.
