Kelsey Plum Addresses Caitlin Clark’s Controversial All-Star Game Comment in Frank Discussion with Sue Bird

Los Angeles Sparks’ player, Kelsey Plum, has spoken out about her controversial comment regarding Caitlin Clark’s team after the WNBA All-Star Game. According to Plum, her comment was intended as a joke, not to create friction.

The issue arose after the All-Star Game when Plum mentioned that “zero members of Team Clark” had attended the morning players’ meeting where decisions about the ‘Pay Us What You Owe Us’ protest shirts were discussed. Her words were found offensive by some fans who interpreted them as a slight against Clark.

On Sue Bird’s podcast “Bird’s Eye View”, Plum admitted that her timing was not ideal and that her words were ripped out of context. She mentioned that she was making a joke at the time, pointing out that Team Clark were hungover, despite their team nickname being ‘hungover’.

The Los Angeles Sparks’ guard admitted her action was a poor choice. She said that in hindsight, owing to the seriousness of the protest shirts and audience reaction, she should have known that the moment was not suitable for a joke. Plum also mentioned that she was more disappointed because her comments detracted from the underlying message behind the protest shirts.

The basketballer’s comments came under the spotlight due to the WNBA’s recurrent pay equity issue and the recent $2.2 billion television rights deal. The protest shirts worn at All-Star Weekend were aimed at enforcing these financial concerns.

Despite Clark being sidelined from playing, she joined her colleagues in wearing the protest shirts. Plum stressed that her comment wasn’t mean to challenge Clark’s dedication. She expressed disappointment that her casual remark deviated from their unity and the actual message they were attempting to communicate.

As the league and union head towards tough negotiations, Plum’s All-Star incident pointed out how even casual remarks could be mistaken and divert from the main issue at hand.
