LeBron James Victorious in Lawsuit Over Alleged False Retirement Claims”
LeBron James, the NBA superstar, is free from a lawsuit filed by Andrew Garcia, a lifelong Lakers fan who claimed he was misled by James’s “The Second Decision” teaser. Garcia dropped the lawsuit after accusing James of “fraud, deception, and misrepresentation”, believing that the player was set to retire.
Garcia had purchased expensive tickets to what he thought would be James’s final game, only to learn that the announcement was actually a liquor advertisement. He withdrew his case after receiving a communication from a representative of PrizePicks, a daily fantasy sports app.
Garcia, a 29-year-old Lakers supporter, filed the lawsuit on October 8, 2025. He claimed that a teaser video released by James on October 7 led him to believe that the player was about to retire. He went on to purchase two tickets for the Lakers’ home game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 31, 2026, each costing $432.83.
The prices of the tickets dropped considerably when it was revealed that James’s announcement was not about his retirement but rather an advertisement for Hennessy VSOP, a brand James is associated with. Garcia sought $865.66 in damages.
LeBron James’s video, which became quickly popular on social media, sparked controversy and led to speculations about his retirement. It led to a significant increase in ticket prices for Lakers games, especially the one against the Cleveland Cavaliers. James and his representatives have not yet publicly commented on the matter.
