Live Coverage: Afghanistan vs Hong Kong’s Opening T20 Clash – Score Updates & Commentary
Welcome to the Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025, where Afghanistan and Hong Kong, China will face off at Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. This is the third time this prestigious tournament will be held in the T20I format and also marks the first time eight teams will participate, divided into two groups.
India, the defending champions, will host the entire event in the UAE due to political tensions with Pakistan. Group B, where Afghanistan is set, features Sri Lanka and Bangladesh along with Hong Kong, China, and has earned the reputation of the ‘group of death’, with as each game could determine survival.
Afghanistan, once considered an underdog, is now a formidable force in cricket. However, the team’s recent defeat in the UAE Tri-Series finale against Pakistan has exposed its weaknesses, notably in batting. To regain the momentum, Afghanistan needs an all-round performance with equal emphasis on batting and bowling. The team already has a powerful bowling lineup, which includes a strong squad of spinners and pacers, all talented and adaptive to the slow tracks of UAE. Yet, their performance hinges on batting where consistency has remained a significant concern.
On the contrary, Hong Kong, China’s hope lies in belief and spirit. This is their fifth Asia Cup appearance and their second time in the T20I format. Anshy Rath, Babar Hayat, Nizakat Khan, Zeeshan Ali are key players who could make a difference in the game while their bowling will rely on spinner Ehsan Khan and pacer Ayush Shukla. However, the team’s preparation has been challenging due to limited exposure to outdoor net practice and match practice against top-tier teams.
UAE’s pitches, known for favoring the team batting first, could provide an edge. The heat in the UAE has caused a minor adjustment to the match schedule, with 18 out of 19 matches starting at 6.30 pm local time.
Both Afghanistan and Hong Kong, China last met in the first round of the 2016 T20I World Cup, where Afghanistan was victorious. But in their most recent encounter in an ODI in the 2018 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier, Hong Kong, China triumphed.
For the Asia Cup 2025 format, the top two teams from each group will proceed to the ‘Super 4’ stage, and the best two teams will then face off in the final.
The tournament holds more than competition – it also offers Afghanistan a shot at validation and Hong Kong, China a chance to create history. The opening match promises action and high-octane drama, raising expectations for an exciting tournament ahead.
