LoL Pro Bwipo Suspended and Apologetic Following Sexist Remarks”

Gabriël “Bwipo” Rau, a professional League of Legends player, apologized after making a sexist comment during a livestream on 9th September 2025. Rau ignited public outrage, particularly on social media, after suggesting that women should refrain from competing in esports during their menstrual cycles. The controversy escalated further when these comments circulated widely on Reddit and Twitter.

FlyQuest, Bwipo’s team, was swift in its response, choosing to suspend him from the upcoming League of Legends Championship of The Americas (LTA) playoffs. Additionally, they committed to donate his prize money from the event to organisations that encourage women’s participation in gaming. This decision was largely applauded as a needed step towards promoting inclusivity within esports.

Subsequently, Rau issued a public apology, in which he attributed his comments to ignorance and disrespect. He regretted using his platform to propagate sexism and negativity, and pledged to reflect, listen, and improve. However, the online community was split over whether his apology was sufficient. Many emphasized that esports needs to show genuine, sustained accountability, not merely issue an apology whenever controversial comments are made.
