London Eyes First International NFL Super Bowl Courtesy of British Ambassador’s Bold Proposal”

The British ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, has proposed that the NFL Super Bowl be held in London for the first time. The notion was presented during a talk at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs in Chicago, Illinois, on Thursday, August 14, 2025. Mandelson is determined to see London confirmed as a Super Bowl host city during his term as ambassador.

Despite the NFL traditionally hosting its championship in the United States, London has demonstrated success in hosting NFL games. Wembley Stadium and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have often hosted regular-season games to sell-out crowds and high viewership, suggesting that the UK has a strong following for American football.

Mandelson’s lofty ambition doesn’t stop at hosting regular season games; he’s aiming for the league’s centerpiece event, the Super Bowl, to be staged in Britain.

Looking forward, the venues for the Super Bowl have already been determined up until 2028, with the earliest potential for an international location being 2029. NFL’s Commissioner, Roger Goodell, has repeatedly spoken about plans for global expansion, though London will face fierce competition from other cities such as Las Vegas, Nashville, Minneapolis, Mexico City, Toronto, and Munich.

Despite challenges surrounding London’s colder February weather, the time-zone difference, and the travel demands, the NFL has demonstrated that international hosting is possible through its successful games in London, Munich, and Mexico City. Mandelson continues to boldly push for London to host the Super Bowl, underlining its robust track record as a host city and solidifying its status as the NFL’s stronghold across the Atlantic.
