Mahomes Speaks on Hunt’s Return to Chiefs After Assault Controversy: ‘He isn’t a Bad Person'” | NFL News | Times of India
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, and head coach Andy Reid have voiced their support for running back Kareem Hunt’s return to the team. This comes six years after Hunt was released due to a video surfacing of him kicking a woman.
Despite the incident, which led to Hunt’s temporary exit from the NFL and brief tenure with the Cleveland Browns, both Mahomes and Reid believe that he deserves a second chance.
This topic was revisited during the team’s docuseries ‘The Kingdom’, where Mahomes emphasized that one bad choice should not define Hunt’s career. He pointed to Hunt’s growth and rehabilitation as reasons for his support.
Mahomes stated, “What he did was wrong, but I know in his heart he isn’t a bad person. It’s how you can become better and learn from them. I think that’s something that he embraced.”
Coach Reid echoed Mahomes’ sentiments and said, “He [Kareem] learned a lesson. Too many people don’t get a second chance, and then they go back and they start doing bad things. He did wrong. He knew he did wrong. You can’t do that. Somebody’s gotta teach you that you can’t do that. He paid for that.”
Hunt himself expressed remorse over the incident and said he wished he could change how he handled it. Since re-signing with the Chiefs, Hunt has been a consistent contributor, playing in 13 games last season and rushing for 728 yards and scoring seven touchdowns on 200 carries.
As preparations for the 2025 NFL season get underway, the Chiefs’ decision to re-sign Hunt remains a topic of discussion. However, key players like Mahomes and Reid have made their stand clear: they believe Hunt has earned a chance to move forward.
