Maple Leafs Consider Bold Trade Proposal for Top Six Winger from Penguins: NHL Updates | Times of India

The Toronto Maple Leafs are eyeing a high-profile acquisition as they seek a replacement for Mitch Marner. Reports are circulating of a potential trade for Pittsburgh Penguins right-winger Bryan Rust, in coverage dominated by discussion of the future of the Leafs’ “Core Four” era.

Rust is a top-six winger with an impressive record of scoring 25-30 goals per season. He recorded 65 points in the previous year and has three years left on a contract signed in 2022. Now that Rust’s no-movement clause has expired, the Penguins might consider trading him.

After parting ways with Mitch Marner, Toronto’s management are clearly feeling the pressure and general manager Brad Treliving is said to be looking closely at Rust. Tristin McKinstry of Heavy Sports has highlighted Rust’s compatibility with the team and flagged him as an ideal fit for the Leafs as they continue their quest for a Stanley Cup. According to McKinstry, “Rust has the ability to score 25-30 goals a season. He would be a fantastic addition for a Maple Leafs team seeking to end its longstanding Stanley Cup drought.”

It’s important to note that the Penguins have recently acquired Nick Robertson, David Kampf, a 2028 first-round pick, and a conditional 2026 third-round pick.

Leafs’ general manager Kyle Dubas is said to be attaching a high asking price to Rust. Over the off-season, there has been a lot of buzz around the Pittsburgh Penguins being open to trades, with names such as Bryan Rust, Rickard Rakell, and Erik Karlsson coming up. But with Dubas said to be asking a lot in return, particularly for Rust, no significant moves have taken place. The proposed trade that would send Rust to Toronto may seem like a good fit for the Leafs, but catching Dubas’s eye might be a tall order for the prospective young talent or prospects involved in the deal.

The situation is one to keep a close eye on for NHL fans, but it seems that if Leafs’ GM Brad Treliving wants to land Bryan Rust, he’ll need to raise his game.
